Ahsay Upgrade Advisory (#31552) – Critical Issue on related to scheduled AhsayOBM/AhsayACB v8 Windows File Backups

We have recently confirmed a critical issue related to scheduled AhsayOBM/AhsayACB File Backup Sets running on Windows.

  • If the Windows account used by the AhsayOBM/AhsayACB scheduler service is “Local System account” which is the default account.
  • There are files/folders selected in the backup source which have NOT been granted read permission to “SYSTEM”.

These files/folders will not be backed up during a scheduled backup job as “Local System account” account does not have read permission for these files/folders.

Although this issue does not affect backup jobs started manually from the AhsayOBM/AhsayACB UI, if these files/folders are successfully backed up on a manual backup job. Any subsequent schedule backup job will move these files to retention area. Where they will be permanently removed after they exceed the retention policy setting for the backup set.

What are the affected AhsayOBM/AhsayACB versions?

  • AhsayOBM v8.5.2.33 - v8.5.2.86.
  • AhsayACB v8.5.2.33 - v8.5.2.86.

How do I check the Windows user account for AhsayOBM/AhsayACB scheduler service?

To verify the Windows account used for the AhsayOBM/AhsayACB scheduler service on the Windows machine (the default account is “Local System account”)

* For AhsayACB go to > Services > Ahsay A-Click Backup Services and select the “Log On” tab.

* For AhsayOBM go to > Services > Ahsay Online Backup Manager Services and select the “Log On” tab.

How do I check if the file/folder has been granted read permission to "SYSTEM" account?

To verify the file/folder has read permission for “SYSTEM” account, right click on a file/folder and select the 'Security“ tab. Then check the permission granted to the file/folder under “Permissions for SYSTEM”

Example: Folder where “SYSTEM” is granted Full Control

What action do I need to take to fix this problem?

Partners are strongly advised to immediately:

  • Upgrade all affected Windows clients with File Backup Sets to AhsayOBM/AhsayACB v8.5.2.87 or above.
  • After upgrading to AhsayOBM/AhsayACB v8.5.2.87 or above, the next backup job will automatically upload any files which were missed previously, if they still exist on the drive(s).

1. If your current AhsayCBS version IS NOT AhsayCBS v8.5.2.62 or above, then upgrade your AhsayCBS to 8.5.2.62 or above first. Please refer to the following KB articles for upgrade instructions:

2. If your current version is already AhsayCBS v8.5.2.87 or above, then simply enable Auto Upgrade for the affected user accounts to allow AhsayOBM/AhsayACB to be upgraded to v8.5.2.87 or above.
