[V8] ISSUE: Skipped backing up powered on virtual machine (VMware vCenter / ESXi 7 non-VDDK backup)

Article ID: 8083
Reviewed: 2020-08-04

Product Version:
AhsayOBM: to 8.x
OS: All

Problem Description

When performing a VMware vCenter / ESXi 7 backup in non-VDDK mode, the following error message is received in the backup report :

No. Type Timestamp Log
* info YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm:ss ....
* erro YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm:ss Skipped backing up powered on virtual machine "VM/virtual_machine_name"
* ... ... ...

This issue is related to a current limitation of the VMware vCenter/ESXi 7 backup module when configured for Non-VDDK mode. Any guest VM's which are powered on will not be backed up.

If the affected guest virtual machine cannot be shutdown during the backup process, then create another backup set to backup virtual machine in VDDK backup mode.  Otherwise, power down all running guest VM before the backup job begins, if you wish to continue the backup in non-VDDK mode.

VMware, vCenter 7, ESXi, VDDK, non-VDDK, power, down, shut, off
