AhsayCBS v8.5.2.62 Customization of AhsayOBM/AhsayACB Free Trial Registration and Save Password options

Introduction

Starting from AhsayCBS v8.5.2.62 or above, there are two additional features that can now be customized on the AhsayOBM/AhsayACB GUI.

These features are the registration option and option. The Free Trial registration option can now be either displayed (default) or hidden from the startup page. While the Save password option can be either displayed or hidden from both the login page and Profile > Authentication page according to the preference of the managed service provider (MSP).

Why customize the Free Trial registration option

The Free Trial registration option allows the prospective customers to download AhsayOBM/AhsayACB client and immediately create a trial account and perform backup/restore on an AhsayCBS backup server without intervention from the managed service provider (MSP).

The Free Trial registration option is only displayed after:

  1. Fresh installation of AhsayOBM/AhsayACB on new machine.
  2. If the .obm or .acb folder is removed from the machine which has AhsayOBM/AhsayACB already installed.

Some MSPs may decide not to offer the Free Trial registration option or prefer to manage the provision Free Trial accounts themselves. Thus AhsayCBS has been enhanced to allow MSPs to do this. Free Trial registration option can now be disabled. Upon initial login, the user will be directed to the login page instead of the startup page.

Why customize the Save password option

The Save password option can also be disabled for increased security. As once a user ticks the Save password checkbox, they will no longer need to enter the password to login to AhsayOBM/AhsayACB. So if a hacker were able to access a computer where AhsayOBM/AhsayACB is installed which has Save password enabled, then all the backup data will be readily available for that hacker.

Disabling the Save password option will also disable this feature in the Profile > Authentication page.

Supported Operating Systems

Below is a table illustrating the supported operating systems for the new features:

Save Password

On Linux/FreeBSD operating systems, the Save password option is only applicable on Linux/FreeBSD GUI. As on Linux/FreeBSD CLI environments, the password is automatically saved after login using RunConfigurator.sh and cannot be disabled. As almost all script files do not support user login functionality, i.e. RunBackupSet.sh, Restore.sh, Decrypt.sh, ListBackupSet.sh, ListBackupJob.sh, RunDataIntegritryCheck.sh etc.

Free Trial registration and Save password options behavior

Below is a table comparing the different behavior of the Free Trial registration and Save password options under two different scenarios.

  • New Installation of AhsayOBM/AhsayACB v8.5.2.62 or above
  • Upgrade of pre-v8.5.2.62 AhsayOBM/AhsayACB to v8.5.2.62 or above

How to customize the Free Trial registration and Save password options

AhsayOBM

  1. In AhsayCBS, go to System Settings > Basic > Administrative Access.
  2. Click on the system user, then go to Rebrand Clients > Application Settings – AhsayOBM and uncheck the “Show free trial option on startup page” and “Show save password option” checkboxes.
  3. Click then to save the settings.
  4. Go to Rebrand Clients > Build Installers. Click “Build Branded Client”. Wait for the process to finish.
  5. Click then to save the settings.

Since the Free Trial registration option is now hidden upon initial opening of AhsayOBM, it should now display the login page instead of the startup page.

AhsayOBM on Windows/macOS/Linux GUI/Synology/QNAP will go straight to the login page with Save password hidden.

The Save password is also hidden in the Profile > Authentication page for all supported operating systems except Linux (CLI).

AhsayOBM on Linux (CLI), the Free Trial registration option is also hidden.
