This document contains instructions on how to temporarily increase the EWS (Exchange Web Services) throttling policy limits in Exchange Online / Outlook mailboxes (Office 365).
This article only applies where backup jobs are encountering throttling on Exchange Online / Outlook mailboxes. It is not supported on OneDrive, Personal Site or SharePoint Site collections. For example, when throttled the following messages are logged the backup log or report "Will retry in 57 second(s). Reason=Request is being throttled".
The option to change EWS throttling settings through the automated help pages has been introduced by Microsoft as a response to the COVID-19 crisis. It is possible that this option may become unavailable over time.
