When performing a guest VM restore on a VMware ESXi host, the following warning message is received in the restore report and the guest VM is not restored:
No. | Type | Timestamp | Log |
* | info | ... | ... |
* | warn | YYYY/MM/DD hh:mm:ss | "Delta disk format of virtual disks is not supported by datastore." |
* | ... | ... | ... |
This issue can occur if the virtual machine was originally backed up on a VMware ESXi host with a datastore on a different VMFS version.
For example the backup of the virtual machine was done on a VMWare ESXi host with a VMFS5 datastore in VDDK backup mode but it is subsequently restored to a VMware ESXi host using a VMFS6 datastore and vice versa.
Note: This limitation does not apply to VMware vCenter backup sets.
To resolve the issue, restore to the guest VM to a VMware ESXi host with a datastore using the same VMFS version.
